The current zoom level is too far out and just shows the town/city where a business is. It would be far better to have it zoomed in far enough to see the street where it is, or better still, to be able to set the zoom level for each listing.

Agreed!  Along with the ability to toggle the map on or off.  
I don't see any value to the local directory, or the biz, or the directory user to show a map without a directions link.  
At best it's frustrating, at worst the user clicks the Google link and gets taken away from our directory to Google's own version
